The PMI PROJECT ENGINEER analyzes the effect of production changes through the use of validation trials within the manufacturing operations of Tesla’s Vehicle Production Group. This would be accomplished by validating both standard and variable metrics as related to the desired change of the product. Interface with the cross functional team to objectively validate changes through use of an engineering mindset; and follow-up on actionable items along with opportunities learned to facilitate a “non-event” introduction.


Responsibilities:

  • Organize manufacturing validation activities for new or revised products into the factory/factories. Clear target is to meet or exceed project timing milestones as set by the Project Manager…..”non-event launch” mentality with each
  • Analyze production changes to isolate potential manufacturing impact through structured manufacturing trials: yield, capacity, capability, etc. Validate standard and variable metrics
  • Environment, health, and safety taken into account in all activities and manufacturing validations
  • Ensure that manufacturing trials are well prepared, and manufacturing is restored to control condition after trials
  • Validate manufacturing processes to ensure product specifications and standards are achieved
  • Ensure that PMI processes are followed in all doings (PCA, MRT, etc)
  • Ensure manufacturing trial reports are complete, analyzed, and well communicated
  • Organization and follow-up of open points/actions that were observed during trials; ensure conveyed as actionable items
  • Interact, integrate, and drive results across cross-functional teams in engineering, quality, production, etc.
  • Author weekly/as needed project status, summary, and issue resolution tracking reports
  • Various other activities as assigned to support NPI and/or other production departments


Requirements:

  • Production Operations Knowledge – Has a general understanding of how complex production lines operate including key items such as industrial workings between facilities/departments, line balance, OEE, error proofing, etc
  • Understanding of how the manufacturing validation process runs in relation to new products (methodology, validation plans, associated KPIs)
  • Process engineering skills desired (process development/improvement, data analysis, constraint analysis, flow optimization, etc.)
  • Capable of identifying critical process parameters and applying statistics to process measurement and control
  • Fundamental understanding of manufacturability, process design, process validation, and assembly methods
  • Interpersonal skills dealing with all levels of an organization, especially skilled at working with direct labor force to understand challenges, and work on developing optimal solutions using structured methods
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Well versed with common workplace software (word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc)
  • Team player; ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with cross-functional teams
  • Previous experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) desired
  • Previous experience with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, etc) is beneficial
  • Ability to read and interpret basic mechanical drawings or CAD models
  • Has a general understanding of production line layout, flow and modeling. Should understand the following:
    • job shops, batch and flow production
    • takt, touch and cycle time
    • bottle neck identification and methods for resolving
    • work station organization and setup / lean manufacturing principles
    • statistical process control
    • designing single flow lines to build multiple products
  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years’ experience in automotive, high tech, or other high volume/high complexity manufacturing in a similar capacity coupled with demonstration of exceptionable ability
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering or related technical field
